Paediatric Intensive Care Training Program

The training program in paediatric intensive care medicine is a minimum of six years and each trainee’s requirements will vary depending on prior experience and qualifications. The required 42 months of specific paediatric intensive care training is divided into three stages:

Foundation Training 6 months (undertaken prior to selection into the program)
Core Training 

24 months (Phase 2)
-6 months can be in general intensive care

Transition Year  12 months (Phase 3)

Other Required Training Time

Clinical Anaesthesia 12 months (Phase 1 or 2)
-this can be undertaken in paediatrics or general
Clinical Paediatric Medicine 12 months (Phase 1 or 2)
Elective 6 months (Phase 1 or 2) 
-this can be undertaken in paediatrics or general
Rural exposure (any discipline) 6 months PGY3+
