Submission is defined as the College receiving a Formal Project (which conforms to Formal Project Requirements) electronically with;

  • The completed Formal Project
  • A scanned copy of the Supervisor’s Project Evaluation Report

All reports must meet the criteria for submission listed in the Formal Project Requirements. This includes a requirement that the presentation has been completed and documented prior to submission. The only exception to this is if candidates are presenting for the Felicity Hawker Medal and the presentation may be a part of the assessment process.

Submit your report

1 Valid electronic copy of Formal Project and Supervisor’s Evaluation Report is submitted to CICM Assessments.
Please ensure to include a conflict-of-interest statement within the project itself or as a separate document.
2 Formal Project is sent to 2 separate reviewers residing in different states to the trainee. Each reviewer will use the Formal Project Assessment Form to evaluate the trainee's project. If a consensus cannot be reached, the panel chair will make the final decision.
3 After 6-8 weeks, results are given to the trainee.
This does not include time needed to review a project resubmission if requested by the panel.

As the College is unable to expedite the assessment process, trainees are advised to submit the project with sufficient time in order to avoid delays with the commencement of Transition Training or the award of Fellowship.

The Felicity Hawker Medal was established in 2004 to honour Dr Felicity Hawker, inaugural Dean of the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. It was adopted by the College upon its establishment in 2010.

Trainees and Fellows within one year of award of Fellowship are given the opportunity to present the material used for their CICM Formal Project submission at the Felicity Hawker Medal session. This is held every year at the CICM Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) and is awarded to the trainee or Fellow who is judged as the best presenter.

For further details on eligibility and submission requirements, please see T-29 Guidelines on the Award of the Felicity Hawker Medal.

How long does it generally take for a project to be assessed?

The panel consists of Fellows who assess projects on a voluntary basis in addition to their normal hospital / teaching commitments. Please allow at least 6 weeks for review. This period may be longer if there are any issues with the submission.

What happens if a project is rejected?

If a project does not meet the minimum standards set out in the Formal Project Requirements, it will not be sent to the review panel. If the panel decides a project is unsatisfactory, specific instructions will be given to assist with a re-submission.

Does the project supervisor have to be an ICU consultant?

No, however it is preferred that the supervisor’s evaluation report is completed by a Fellow of the College as they are more involved in the requirements.

Does the project have to be presented?

Yes. Please refer to the project requirements for specific details.

Can a project be assessed by the College before it has been presented?

Unless being presented at the Felicity Hawker Medal session of the Annual Scientific Meeting, all projects must be presented prior to submission.

Who assesses the project?

All projects are assessed by members of the Formal Project Panel. Each project is assessed individually by two reviewers from different states/territories. If they disagree on the assessment, it will go to the Formal Project Panel Chair for a final decision.

College Members can access a number of previously accepted Formal Projects from within the Members Portal.

Members will find a list of Formal Projects in the Education tab under the Resources section.
