Specialist High Level Requirements

Specialist high-level requirements are any education, performance review or measuring outcomes activities that must be included in a specialist’s CPD program. The Medical Board of Australia approves and publishes high-level requirements for specialists registered in Board-recognised specialties and fields of specialty practice.

All CICM Fellows including Dual Fellows, must include the relevant high-level requirements mandated by the college(s) of their registered speciality in their annual CPD program, regardless of the CPD home chosen.

From January 2025 Airway Management will be a Specialist High Level Requirement (SHLR) for all CICM fellows, to be completed once every three years.

The first three-year cycle within which the requirement must be completed is 2025 - 2027.

If you become a new fellow of the College within any three year cycle you are exempt from the SHLR until the following triennium.

Once every three years, it will be a requirement to complete a CICM - approved airway management course that involves:

  • An in-person practical workshop
  • Both a preparatory and post activity component
  • Simulation activities that involve performing intubation on appropriate mannequins to expose participants to difficult airway scenarios and include team-based responses
  • Participation of a minimum of 3 hours, including preparatory, in person and post activity
  • Aspects of airway management of critically ill patients that specifically consider:
    • Airways assessment
    • Approaches to difficult airway and airway emergencies
    • Teamwork and leadership in an airway crisis
    • Familiarity with equipment
    • CICO algorithms (can’t intubate, can’t oxygenate)
    • Management of tracheostomy emergencies
