ICU Junior Registrar

Role Description:

As the Junior ICU Registrar you will learn skills in the assessment, triage, resuscitation, and further management of patients with acute medical and surgical disorders.

You will gain experience in techniques and procedures associated with respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal support. The training obtained is suitable for accreditation for postgraduate training in Anaesthesia, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Intensive Care Medicine.

There are opportunities to learn flexible bronchoscopy, echocardiography, and participate in quality improvement work.

Depending on individual training requirements, the ICU registrar position can include three and six month rotations to Intensive Care Units in Alice Springs Hospital in the Northern Territory, as well as six-month rotations to affiliated hospitals for anaesthesia and general medicine.

You will participate in a comprehensive education program, including dedicated First Part and Second Part Examination preparation, echocardiography, and simulation training.

Opportunities also exist to participate in the research program, including supervision and support for your formal project.

Retrieval Registrar

Role Description:

Adult Retrieval Victoria (ARV) is part of Ambulance Victoria (AV) and is the sole provider of state-wide clinical coordination, retrieval, and critical care services for inter hospital transfers within Victoria.

ARV transfers have a high degree of complexity and include Major Trauma and ECMO transfers.

ARV is currently seeking applications from Advanced Trainees, Registrars and Senior Registrars who have an interest in pre-hospital and retrieval medicine and would like to develop their skills in this area.

The positions on offer are full-time, fixed term appointments for 6 months, with start dates in February 2027 and August 2027 and are based in Essendon Fields.

2026 Semester 2 - Intensive Care Registrar

Role Description:

Intensive Care at Western Health

We provide specialised care to a young patient population with notably high severity of illness scores compared with other metropolitan ICUs.

Sunshine ICU has 13 bedspaces admitting approximately 1250 critically ill adults per year (average APACHE3 score is 65).

New Footscray ICU has 11 bedspaces and currently admits approximately 900 critically ill adults per year (average APACHE3 score 59.5) with plans to expand its footprint soon.

We admit medical patients together with both elective and emergency surgical patients supporting our specialised surgical services which include Thoracic, Colorectal, Vascular, and Upper GI surgery.

We are proud to have an established multidisciplinary Cardiogenic Shock Service including the provision of Mechanical Cardiac Support in the form of Impella.

We also admit a significant number of complex critically unwell obstetric patients at Sunshine ICU supporting our colleagues at the co-located Joan Kirner Women’s & Children’s Hospital.

Both sites are accredited by the CICM for General Training, as well as by ACEM, RACP and ANZCA.

Key responsibilities:

  • Participate in on-going assessment of competencies via college assessment forms.
  • Perform unit duties as delegated by the Unit Head or Receiving Consultant in accordance with Western Health policies and procedures and relevant legislation.
  • Ensure notification to the appropriate consultant of patients referred to the Department, and provision of initial assessment of referred patients.
  • Ensure quality patient care via clinical assessment, admissions, and development of management plans.
  • Accurately reflect the patient’s requirements, outcomes, or events within prescribed Western Health documentation, ensuring all legal requirements are met in regard to legibility of content and identity of reporter in accordance with Western Health policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the development of discharge plans that reflects the needs of patients and their significant others and demonstrates understanding of the role of community providers.
  • Assume responsibility for communication with community providers.

2027 Intensive Care Transition Year Fellow - Dandenong Hospital

Role Description:

Dandenong ICU is a large metropolitan general intensive care unit located in the Southeast of Melbourne. It is known for its acute case mix and outstanding working culture.

Early works for a new 16 bed ICU will commence towards end of 2026, as part of the Dandenong Hospital modernisation re-development.

Capacity

  • 14 physical beds, 10 funded equivalent beds

Staff

  • 8 FCICM, totalling 5.5 FTE
  • 12 Registrars, with mix of CICM trainees, ED rotators and Anaesthetics Rotators
  • 4 Critical Care Senior HMO

Casemix

  • 20% elective (Colorectal, General Surgery, ENT, Plastics, Orthopaedics etc.)
  • 40% emergency (Sepsis, toxicology, GI bleeds, liver failure, cardiac arrests etc.)
  • 40% Ward referrals / METs
  • Around 200 MET calls a month

About the Role

Up to 2 Transition Year (TY) Trainee positions will be offered at the Dandenong Hospital ICU, aimed to fulfil the training requirements of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).

It is a 12-month training post that bridges the gap between a supervised registrar and independent consultant practice in intensive care.

Trainees manage critically ill patients, supervise junior medical staff, engage in non-clinical activities like research and teaching, and develop the autonomy and communication skills required for a consultant intensivist role.

An innovative opportunity exists to develop subspecialised skills as Infectious Disease TY or Artificial Intelligence TY scholar.

ICU Senior Registrar

Role Description:

The Senior Registrar role in ICU at SVHM is a senior appointment within the Intensive Care Unit. The position allows senior trainees to take on greater responsibility within the unit, developing managerial and leadership skills while overseeing junior medical staff.

The role involves liaising and coordinating with nursing colleagues and other inpatient teams to provide exemplary care through a multidisciplinary approach.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, you will be involved in the organisation and delivery of teaching for junior medical staff.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate advanced skills in the assessment, triage, resuscitation, and ongoing management of patients with acute medical and surgical disorders, while also supervising and supporting junior trainees.

You should be comfortable with techniques and procedures associated with respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal support.

ICU Transition Year Fellow Sunshine Hospital 2027

Role Description:

The Transition Year Fellow will be rostered to Sunshine Hospital ICU for 12 months and will report directly to the on-call Intensivist for all clinical matters.

The Transition Year Fellow has an individual roster line, with a combination of day, evening, night and on call shifts. The exact shift proportions may vary to ensure the clinical needs of the unit are met. There will be 3 monthly feedback provided to the TY fellow (including the required CICM ITERs), with more frequent feedback by the CICM SOTs or ICU Director, as necessary.

The Supervisors of Training and Directors of Intensive Care are responsible for determining what level of clinical autonomy is recommended for an individual TY Fellow over time. The degree of clinical autonomy will also be discussed at the ICU consultant group’s regular review of the fellow’s performance.

It is anticipated the level of direct clinical supervision provided by the supervising Intensivist will vary over time, and will allow for independent unit management, ward round, and first on call opportunities in preparation for junior consultant role.

2027 Intensive Care Registrar

Role Description

The Bendigo Health ICU is an accredited Training Site under the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). It is credentialed for CICM Foundation training, 6-months of Core Intensive Care Medicine Training (C6 accreditation), and 6-months Elective training as a General and Rural/Regional unit.

Rotations vary, with 6 months guaranteed in the Intensive Care Unit and the remaining 6 months comprised of one of the following:

  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Palliative Care Medicine

Preferences for rotations will be discussed during interviews and determined based upon applicants’ training and operational requirements.

For trainees who are part of CICM, a 6-month rotation through Anaesthetics may be available.

All terms fulfil requirements for the Rural component of CICM training. The unit is credentialed for Phase 0, 1, 2 and 3 (Transition Year) CICM trainees and can support Part 1 and Part 2 CICM examination preparation, along with CICM Formal Research projects.

ICU Junior Registrar

Role Description:

The Epworth Richmond Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 26-bed unit that admits more than 2000 patients annually.

The unit is a general adult medical and surgical ICU including cardiac surgery, and also runs the medical emergency team and code blue services.

As the ICU Junior Registrar, you will be working within the ICU learning the knowledge and skills to manage these patients, including procedural skills, mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy and therapies and devices used to manage cardiac surgical patients.

You will be supported by Senior ICU Registrars and Consultants, working in a multidisciplinary team with a majority of CCRN nursing staff and clinical nurse educators.

2027 Intensive Care Medicine Registrars - Dandenong and Casey

Role Description:

As an Intensive Care Medicine Registrar at Monash Health, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within our dynamic ICU teams.

Under the guidance of your Unit Head/Consultant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Comprehensive Patient Care: Manage critically ill patients by conducting thorough assessments, formulating diagnoses, and implementing management plans.
  • Procedural Expertise: Perform and supervise procedures relevant to patient care, ensuring adherence to training and competency standards.
  • After-Hours Support: Participate in the after-hours and “Standby on-call” rosters, maintaining consistent care standards.

Role Description:

An exciting opportunity exists for suitably qualified applicants to join the Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) Intensive Care Unit and the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) Intensive Care Unit as an Intensive Care Registrar or Senior Registrar in 2027.

Both full-time and part-time applications are welcome. Successful candidates will work at both sites during their employment period.

Registrars and Senior Registrars will be responsible for the care of acutely unwell patients within the MMC and VHH Intensive Care Units, under the supervision of a Consultant Intensivist.

This Transition Year fellow position at Monash Medical Centre and Victorian Heart Hospital has been developed in accordance with the college requirement to allow completion of training and admission to the College of Intensive Care Medicine.

The aim is to introduce consultant activities into the trainee’s experience in a structured manner with progressively decreasing supervision, in preparation for life as a junior consultant.
