Role Description:

The Senior Registrar is responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital as determined by the relevant Unit. They are also responsible for attending any trauma callouts in the Emergency Department and responding to referrals and consults. They provide oversight and supervision for junior medical staff within the team and assist with the delivery of regular trauma education programs.

Role Description:

You will provide high-quality specialist intensive care services and clinical leadership across the ICU and the broader hospital, supporting safe systems, patient flow, and a positive learning culture.

Key clinical and professional accountabilities include:

  • Deliver contemporary specialist Intensive Care services, including admission/discharge decision-making and consultative support to deteriorating ward and ED patients.
  • Provide clinical leadership within ICU, supporting best practice care, multidisciplinary decision-making, and effective patient flow.
  • Supervise and support registrars and junior medical staff, contributing to a culture of coaching, feedback, and ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in quality improvement, clinical audit, safety and governance activities consistent with THS priorities and NSQHS standards.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in partnership with the University of Tasmania / Rural Clinical School and THS training programs.
  • Participate in the after-hours on-call roster. The frequency of on-call is typically 1:4 (rosters may vary with service requirements and leave coverage).

Staff Specialist - Intensivist

Role Description: The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) and the Neonatal and Paediatric ICU (NPICU) are seeking interest from suitably qualified clinicians for a permanent full-time or part-time Staff Specialist – Intensivist position, to provide for the critical care needs of paediatric patients. The RHH is Tasmania’s tertiary referral centre and is also the primary teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania, School of Medicine.

There is potential for applicants with an interest in anaesthesia and/or adult critical care to be supported to establish a position across departments.

The successful applicant will lead the clinical care of critically ill infants and children cared for by our NPICU. The NPICU provides a state-wide tertiary service with a combined model of care (neonatology and paediatric critical care) but with a split consultant roster for NICU and PICU patients. Our Paediatric Intensivists collaborate closely with neonatologists in the NPICU, support the Tasmanian Critical Care Retrieval Service in providing a Paediatric Emergency Transport Service, and work with our adult ICU colleagues at the RHH in the care of older paediatric critical care patients.

This is an opportunity for a Staff Specialist based at the RHH and able to care for critically ill infants and children. The role requires candidates to provide clinical services of the highest possible standard for sick term neonates, infants, children, and the Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (PETSo). The role includes:

  • Provision of on-call services for Paediatric Intensive Care and PETS, including diagnosis, treatment, and care for paediatric patients in the RHH NPICU, and supervision and/or conduct of paediatric emergency retrievals.
  • Pursuit of improved outcomes for critically ill children in Tasmania by participating in teaching, research and clinical practice improvement initiatives relevant to paediatric intensive care.
  • Provide supervision and advice in matters relating to paediatric intensive care throughout 1 Tasmania.
  • Commit to skills maintenance in the Paediatric Intensive Care discipline.

Basic Trainee - Acute Care

Role Description: Basic Trainee in Acute Care (previously known as Senior Resident Medical Officer in Acute Care) The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) and the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine (DAPM) at the Royal Hobart Hospital offer prevocational positions as Basic Trainee’s in Acute Care. These consist of six months in Intensive Care and six months in Anaesthesia during the one-year tenure. Up to 6 positions are available if there are suitable applicants. We are looking for doctors with strong clinical skills and knowledge, and excellent communication skills, who have career interest in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Remote and Rural Medicine (ACRRM). In ICU, Basic Trainees in Acute Care will work day and night shifts under the supervision of Consultant Intensivists and Senior Registrars. They are rostered with the general registrar pool and have similar duties. After hours, they are supported by ICU registrars and on-call but off-site Senior Registrars and Consultants. They should expect to work some rostered overtime. Additionally, they may be rostered to our satellite private ICU, which predominantly cares for high-risk perioperative patients including cardiac, thoracic, neurosurgical and other major surgical cases with some medical admissions. In this role they will work under direct supervision of a Consultant Intensivist. In Anaesthesia, Basic Trainees in Acute Care work under supervision of a Specialist Anaesthetist within main theatres, the day procedure unit, the acute pain service and pre-admission clinics. They will work day and evening shifts with participation in the weekend after-hours roster, including the acute pain service, when assessed as competent to do so. They also provide general duties in the pre-admission clinic for all surgical specialties approximately 1 day per week. The RHH has a broad medical and surgical case mix including major trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, paediatric surgery and obstetrics. Allocation of term order is determined by the two departments. These positions align with the REGISTRAR term dates, commencing 1 February 2027 – 7 th February 2028. 1

Role Description:

Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) at Royal Hobart Hospital is now recruiting Intensive Care Fellows/Senior Registrars and CICM Transitional Fellows for the 2027 year (1 February 2027 – 7 February 2028).

Applicants must have significant tertiary intensive care experience, including recent experience in Australia or New Zealand.

They should have completed or be near to completing the final exam for Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine, or equivalent.

They require independent resuscitation, team leadership and communication skills.

Successful applicants will be given opportunity to independently lead ward rounds and guide management, to take referrals, manage patient flow and run the unit with Consultant Specialist oversight, an ideal preparation for future Consultant roles.

They will take leadership roles with family meetings and organ donation casework.

These are senior positions in a busy tertiary ICU that include taking first on-call off-site after hours, similar to the Consultants.

They are designed for CICM advanced trainees in Intensive Care as pre-consultant roles and may include non-clinical administrative portfolio work.

CICM Transitional Fellow is a specific role for final year CICM trainees, with pre-approval from the College for this to be accredited.

Royal Hobart Hospital has Tasmania’s only Tertiary Level 3 ICU and is the major referral centre.

We are C24 CICM accredited and admit a broad medical and surgical case mix, which includes Cardiac Surgery, ECMO, Neurosurgery, Major Trauma and all surgical and medical subspecialties.

We run two 12 bed pods with Registrars and SRMO’s working a day-night, shiftwork roster, supervised by Fellows/SRs who are off-site after hours, with Consultant Intensivist support.

We have a robust protected-time teaching program, including simulation, journal club and active bedside teaching during rounds.

Our safety and quality systems include monthly mortality and morbidity meetings coordinated by our ICU Fellows.

We staff and manage the hospital Medical Emergency Response System, the hospital-wide TPN Service and a 7-day nurse-led ICU Liaison Service.

Intensive Care Registrar – CICM Trainees preferred

Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) at Royal Hobart Hospital has two Intensive Care Registrar positions available to cover upcoming parental leave.

The first of these will commence at the end of April 2026 and the second will commence from the start of July 2026. Both positions will end 1 February 2027. We may consider extended contracts into 2027 for suitable candidates.

Royal Hobart Hospital has Tasmania’s only Tertiary Level 3 Intensive Care Unit and we are the referral centre for all major specialties.

We have C24 CICM accreditation and a very broad medical and surgical case mix – including Cardiac Surgery, ECMO, Neurosurgery, Major Trauma and all surgical and medical subspecialties.

This broad general case mix makes our unit really well suited for trainees preparing for exams, and over many years our trainees have had outstanding exam success.

We have strong relationships with other RHH departments and can negotiate rotations to cover all the CICM-required non-ICU training terms. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to continue their training in Tasmania.

We run two 12 bed pods with Registrars and BASIC TRAINEES (SRMOs) working a day-night, shiftwork roster supervised by Fellows/Senior Registrars who are off-site after hours and 9 Consultant Intensivists.

We have a robust, protected-time weekly teaching program.

We also manage a private satellite unit, with CIM accreditation, with predominantly perioperative case mix including major Cardiac Surgery and Neurosurgery. We rotate registrars on a combined roster across the two sites.

ICU Registrars and other JMOs may be required to work up to 3 months per year at our satellite unit at Calvary Hospital. This unit is accredited by CICM and provides tertiary-level cardiothoracic and neurosurgery support.

Registrar/Senior Registrar/Fellow - Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine - 2027

Role Description: 

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitable applicants for Registrar and Fellow vacancies in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).

The RHH Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine (DDHM) is fully accredited for ANZCA Advanced Certificate of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine training, subject to the applicant meeting ANZCA requirements. The positions are also accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and the Australian College for Rural and Remote Medicine for advanced training as a Special Skills Category A term, and are approved by the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society for the SPUMS Diploma of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine.

All applicants must be fit to dive as per AS/NZS 2299.1 or AS/NZS 4774.2.

The SPUMS Diploma is suitable for registrars at any level of training.

The ANZCA Advanced Certificate program requires candidates to be in their Fellowship year or Post-Fellowship.

Applications can be accepted from Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, General Practice, Rural & Remote Medicine, or other training programs.

The DDHM is the State referral centre for diving emergencies and is the only medical recompression facility in Tasmania. The facility recently entered an exciting new phase, moving into a world class dual-function, triple-lock, multiplace Hyperbaric/Hypobaric chamber complex in the new RHH redevelopment – which is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Tasmania has a population of approximately 25,000 active divers of which 2,000 are professional divers. The hyperbaric facility conducts over 2,000 patient treatments annually and manages approximately 20-30 cases of decompression illness and 60-80 acute non-decompression emergencies. The RHH hyperbaric facility has full critical care capability.

Hyperbaric medical, nursing and technical staff are involved in a number of international collaborative research projects and multi-centre randomised trials and will provide support to successful applicants in undertaking research projects. Protected time is provided for teaching and attendance at specialty training programs in addition to support to attend the short courses in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine held each year at either the Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth or HMAS Penguin in Sydney.

Specialists at the DDHM have close links with Tasmanian professional diving industries. There are opportunities for field visits to professional and offshore diving operations whilst working at the facility.
