Registrar Intensive Care Service and Trainee

Role Description:

Location: Southwest Health Campus, Bunbury Hospital, South West Region in Western Australia.

Bunbury ICU is accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand for Foundation and Rural training.

Service / Trainee Positions:

  • 6 Registrars (trainees / service) – 6 or 12-month positions for Intensive Care
  • 1 Registrar – CICM Trainee: 12-month Specialist Training Program (STP) position with 6-month rotation in Anaesthetics

The Transition Year (TY) position provides the opportunity for trainees to work alongside ICU specialists in the day-to-day running of the unit while having access to immediate ICU specialist support and supervision as required.

It is expected that the TY trainee will fully meet the objectives as detailed within the CICM T-26 guideline.

Bunbury Regional Hospital ICU is a progressive Level 2 ICU.

It is an eight-bed unit that sees over 600 admissions per year and is dedicated to the management of patients with life-threatening illnesses, injuries and complications.

Intensive Care Unit Registrar - Transition Year

Role Description:

Transition year training position – Flinders Medical Centre

The Transition Year position is a role between that of registrar and consultant, with flexibility and graded responsibility to allow increasing clinical autonomy, and development of skills in research and administration.

It is aimed to assist the movement of the trainee into specialist practice and build on those skills and attributes acquired in the early years of training and which were assessed in the formal exams and in workplace-based assessments.

The position will allow flexibility and graded responsibility allowing increased autonomy and progression towards specialist practice.

KEY OUTCOMES / ACTIVITIES

During the year, the trainee will aim to achieve all the key and enabling competencies expected of a specialist or expert, particularly those of Medical (clinical) Expert, Communicator, Collaborator (team worker), Manager (leader), Health Advocate, Scholar (educator) and Professional.

Initially, any new incoming TY registrar will be rostered to a Senior Registrar role, where they will receive additional supervision from the ICU Consultant group.

This will also allow the registrar to become familiar with the ICU and hospital environment, as well as day-to-day logistics.

NON-CLINICAL FRACTION

There will be mandatory non-clinical fraction which will range from 0.2 FTE to 0.5 FTE.

This partition will depend upon whether candidates wish to experience general consultant practice or focus on domains of research, teaching, or echocardiography.

Irrespective of domain, all Transition Year fellows would be required to engage in one of the several safety and quality standards within ICU and engage in various administrative roles.

Intensive Care Registrar

Role Description:

Reporting to the Division of Medicine, Cardiac & Critical Care Director, this role is responsible for delivering comprehensive intensive care medicine to critically ill patients, participating in multidisciplinary care teams, contributing to clinical decision-making, and supporting ICU outreach services across the hospital network while advancing professional development through structured training programmes.

Duties for the role will include:

  • Providing care and assuming responsibility for patients in the Critical Care Unit, under supervision of the Consultant.
  • Conducting inpatient and procedural consultations of patients including assessing, analysing, diagnosing, managing, treating, educating and supporting patients presenting to them.
  • Ensuring optimum outcomes by providing opinions in respect of diagnosis, attributability and assessment of inpatients and referrals as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that administrative duties relating to the proper functioning of the unit and the hospital are carried out.
  • Participating in Unit meetings and hospital committees including other Government and non-Government agencies as directed by the Unit Head, or Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services or by the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Participating in teaching of medical students at graduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Assisting in the development, administration and organisation of programs for teaching in these areas as directed by the Unit Head or Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services.
  • Assisting with research activities as specified by the Unit Head or Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services by conducting research and collaborating with other units within the hospital and other Critical Care units.
  • In collaboration with other relevant staff, ensuring that services are continually evaluated and improved by participating in peer reviews, clinical reviews, quality improvement programs and using this information to compare and review outcomes.
