Intensive Care Specialist Mentor

Role Description: The Intensive Care Specialist Mentor will work through the Australian Volunteers Program to support the National Referral Hospital’s high-dependency unit in Honiara. This hybrid assignment includes 3 months on-site followed by 3 months of remote support.

The mentor will assist in identifying gaps in the existing critical care model, support the development of clinical guidelines, patient pathways, and protocols, and provide coaching and education to hospital staff. They will also help incorporate and align processes with DFAT-assisted projects such as ROMAC, Interplast, ANZGITA, and PRIDA.

This role is essential due to the lack of cohesive intensive care practice and training within the Solomon Islands. The assignment contributes to strengthening clinical governance and improving the management of critically ill patients in a low-resource setting.

Experience: Fellow of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) or equivalent; experience in low-resource settings; skills in developing clinical guidelines; cultural competency; and the ability to build collaborative relationships.

On-site Intensivist Trainer

Role Description: The On-site Intensivist Trainer will support the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital ICU department through hands-on capacity building and clinical mentorship. The trainer will work on-site Monday to Friday (8am–5pm), participate in ward rounds, support ICU and Anaesthesia trainees (especially those enrolled at Fiji National University), and provide after-hours phone advice for on-call doctors.

Responsibilities include identifying gaps in care, co-developing clinical protocols and guidelines, coaching staff in the management of critically ill patients, and delivering structured procedural and teaching support for ICU and Anaesthesia services.

This role is part of a two-year capacity-building effort aiming to produce two locally trained intensivists who will continue the development of intensive care services in Samoa.

Experience: FCICM (Fellow of the College of Intensive Care Medicine) or equivalent; 5–10 years of ICU experience including in resource-limited settings; skilled proceduralist and patient educator; culturally competent team player with strong communication and mentoring skills.

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am – 5pm

Remuneration:

  • Living Allowance: AUD $1,407/month
  • Accommodation Allowance: AUD $620/month
  • 20 days leave per 12 months (plus public holidays)

Senior Clinical Fellow in Trauma Critical Care

Role Description:

The clinical role is undertaken entirely on the Adult Critical Care Unit. The indicative rota is outlined in part 3. The successful applicant will also have dedicated time for engagement with the major trauma governance process. The Trauma Governance Team is a multi-specialty team comprising consultants and fellows in critical care, trauma surgery, anaesthesia, emergency medicine, and prehospital medicine. We run a weekly consultant-led meeting which alternates between Trauma Case Review and Morbidity and Mortality (M&M). There will be opportunities to present at meetings and interface with consultants in these fields alongside fellows in other specialties undertaking similar roles. This role will have a particular emphasis on developing and delivering the educational output from this process.

In order to fully understand how Barts Health delivers trauma care, there will be opportunities to observe the trauma patient’s journey firsthand including-

  • Undertaking the ACCU runner role- this is the primary critical care response to major trauma at RLH. It will make up part of your normal rostered clinical hours if you are airway trained.
  • The prehospital phase with London’s Air Ambulance (overnight car-based service)
  • In the ED (shadowing the trauma team leader)
  • In theatre observing the trauma surgeons and trauma anaesthetists.
  • Shadowing the trauma anaesthetic consultant conducting regional anaesthesia for trauma patients
