CICM Mentoring

Support | Enable | Empower

CICM mentoring establishes a partnership that can make all the difference to a Trainee as they navigate the challenges of learning about our profession.

Our Program is an exciting opportunity for Trainees at any stage of their career to connect with a CICM Fellow - enabling growth with a particular focus on collegiality, career development and leadership.

CICM Mentoring matches mentors with mentees and provides a platform for Trainees to seek information, guidance, and advice on how to successfully map their career pathway in intensive care medicine.

 CICM Mentoring is dedicated to:

  • Creating a culture of collegiate support whereby we normalise our professional responsibility to assist in the growth of others in our craft group.
  • Enabling a formalised mentoring mechanism to support Trainees on route to becoming an Intensive Care Specialist.
  • Provide support via structure and tailored learning resources for a CICM-specific mentoring experience.

In 2023, CICM received seed funding from the Commonwealth Government of Australia:

CICM funding was received via a FATES (Flexible Approach to Training in Expanded Settings) grant to create a pilot for our mentoring program. This pilot (the Rural Trainee Mentoring Project) will recruit a Network of FCICM Mentors from Australian and New Zealand metropolitan, rural and regional places to act as mentors to CICM Trainees undergoing rural placements in Australia in 2024 (as defined by current CICM guidelines).

Mentors will continue to support their mentees as required during the 12 months pilot and beyond, by mutual agreement. If successful, the goal is to roll out this program to all CICM trainees in 2025/26.
