Board Elections

The College Board election results were announced at the CICM Annual General Meeting in Darwin, congratulations to Dianne Stephens for her successful re-election and to Rinaldo Bellomo for his election to the Board.
 
A motion was also presented to the AGM to amend the constitution to allow secure online voting for Board elections. This motion was unanimously passed. It is hoped that online voting will be used in the 2016 Board elections.

The 2015 New Fellows Conference is being held in picturesque Byron Bay and registration is free for all delegates!

The program is diverse and will offer advice and useful information on hospital inspections and administration, dealing with a trainee in difficulty, being the only FCICM in the unit and other issues that new Fellows may face.
 
Numbers are limited which allows for robust and in depth discussions and great networking opportunities.

CICM 2015 ASM - Wrap Up

The 11^th CICM Annual Scientific Meeting was held from 28 – 31 May at the Darwin Convention Centre, the theme was Catch the Bug - Battling Infectious Disease in ICU.
Ably led by Associate Professor Dianne Stephens, the single- theme program proved a perfect opportunity for prominent international and Australian experts to present, exchange information and provide a global perspective on infectious disease.
 
The social functions proved to be a great opportunity for people to network, relax and catch up with colleagues. The welcome function provided the opportunity to sample some local Darwin cuisine whilst patting a baby croc and snake!
 
The ASM Dinner and Graduation Ceremony was a great success – with a warm but wet evening overlooking the Arafura Sea. The College welcomed 23 New Fellows.

CICM Events

Fellow Education Workshops
The College is running a series of educational workshops for CICM Supervisors and Fellows. The workshop includes trainee mapping exercises with a focus on individual trainee’s predicted training pathway for the next few years and to identify required non ICU rotations, and to assist Supervisors in giving realistic advice to trainees about their training plans. The day will also include a professional development session in the afternoon with simulation activities with actors. The regional committees will be asked to provide input on the content of these afternoon sessions.
 
The workshops provide an opportunity for networking and sharing of common education and training issues and potential solutions.
 
These workshops will be taking place in the following locations:

Communications Course

This course is designed to provide CICM trainees with the skills required to communicate effectively with patients and families in the ICU setting. The program includes planning and conducting family meetings, verbal skills, breaking bad and catastrophic news and also includes interactive role plays with professional actors.

The Overseas Aid Committee has introduced a grant for Post-graduate Fellows to partake in experiences in critical care in low resource settings. I was fortunate to get the first of these grants and I used it to work for 3 months in Fiji under the guidance of Dr. Lisa Bennett, a FCICM/FANZCA whom has been working in Suva with Fiji National University for over a decade helping to build a critical care training program.
