Winner of Overseas Aid Grant 2015

Flying into Fiji was stunning; lush greenery, mountains and gorgeous blue waters. Thankfully living in Brisbane prepared me somewhat so the Fiji heatwave shock wasn’t as drastic as it could have been! But it was still pretty drastic!

The first week was spent with a crew from the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, Brisbane, teaching on a Paeds BASIC course. The schedule was pretty hectic (and we kept to time thanks to our fearless coordinator) but we also fit in some time to see the sites! The course itself was a huge success. The local paediatric doctors and nurses grew in knowledge and confidence before our eyes, and I had the opportunity to see this learning put into practice, and reinforce it over the following three months. I was lucky enough to have two Australasian trained Intensivists Lisa Bennet (now a local after 10 years) and Di Stephens (Director of Darwin ICU) practicing primarily in teaching roles through the Fiji National University during my stay.

Communications Course
25 August 2016 | Adina Apartment Hotel | Perth

A one day course providing trainees with the skills to communicate with families and patients in an ICU setting.  Dr Steve Philpot convenes the day with a psychologist and assistance from local Fellows. The morning covers topics including; verbal and nonverbal skills, the importance of empathy, delivering bad and catastrophic news and planning family meetings, with the afternoon dedicated to small group skills practice with actors. This course is a mandatory part of training for all trainees who registered from 1 January 2014.

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea is provided, so please make sure to notify us of any dietary requirements.

Fellowship Education Workshop | New Zealand 
16 August | Wellington, NZ | Amora Hotel.

The workshop is a good opportunity for Fellows to meet with colleagues to discuss trainees in their region and learn about the College workplace based assessment tools. The program includes a Q&A Session for attendees to ask the Director of Professional Affairs and staff about any College matters.

2017 ASM is returning to the single organ theme.
‘Gastroenterology in the ICU: From beginning to End’.

An exceptional line-up of international and national speakers will update us on the latest evidence, theories and practice, involving the GI system and its evolving importance in critically ill patients. Along with the traditional session set-up, there will be rapid-fire topic and guideline challenging sessions to stir up debate and discussion.

Management Skills Course 

Course Dates and locations for 2017:
Wellington NZ  30 - 31 March
Brisbane  7 - 8 September
 
The two day course will be held in Wellington and in Brisbane in 2017.  The course is specifically designed for trainees who are close to completion of training and our CICM Fellows. 

Participants will increase their knowledge and develop skills in various non-clinical aspects of consultant practice:
• Management skills(Performance and Conflict resolution skills)
• Negotiation
• Economics and challenges to ICU
• Risk Management and Patient Safety
• Quality and Benchmarking

With the guidance and knowledge of our leading International and National experts, join us for what promises to be an exceptional course, designed to improve your management skills.
