First Part Exam
The written component of the First Part Examination was recently held in February. Out of 42 candidates that sat the written exam, 33 candidates have been invited to sit the oral component. The oral exam will be held in Melbourne and is scheduled for next Thursday and Friday, 28 - 29 April. We would like to wish all candidates sitting the exam the best of luck. 'A History of the Intensive Care Unit within the Family
of Royal Perth Hospital'- written by Geoffery Clarke
The College recently received a copy of 'A History of the Intensive Care Unit within the Family of Royal Perth Hospital' 
written by Dr Geoffery Clarke. Once we had a look through the book we knew it was something to let our members know about. So we asked Geoffery to provide us with information on how you can obtain a copy of this interesting read.

To date the feedback on ‘A History of the Intensive Care Unit within the Family of Royal Perth Hospital’ has been extremely positive. The usual comment is “I thought the book would be pretty dry reading” but its not like that at all!  It was written to acknowledge people who actually work at the ‘coal face’ within a hospital. The book covers much more than a history of ICU per se. Such a unit cannot exist in isolation and is dependent on the help and services of many individuals and departments. A broad range of hard working innovative individuals are thus covered. Brief accounts of many departments are included.

The reader will find there are case histories, sections on both IC nurse and medical training as well as accounts of both humorous and very sad situations. Past trainees who replied to emails concerning their time in RPH ICU are all included and also provide interested reading.

As the bulk of people working in ICU are nurses they receive special attention.

The book costs $25 plus postage and profits go to the Royal Perth Hospital Medical Research Foundation. To obtain a copy contact Emily Cook, emily.cook@health.wa.gov.au or phone one of the other MRF staff on 08 92243942

Norva Dahlia Foundation Study Grant
2016 Grant Application Round
The Norva Dahlia Study Grant is made available by a donation from the family of Norva Dahlia Potter, who was a patient in the intensive care unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Its purpose is to assist Fellows or advanced/core trainees of the College in furthering their professional and scientific training in intensive care medicine. The Grant may be used for a specific short term project, or for costs associated with a short period of study overseas. (Attendance at an overseas conference would not normally be regarded as a period of study.) Recipients will be expected to deliver a tangible outcome from the project or period of study, for example a publication or presentation at a significant scientific meeting.
 
Value: Up to $5,000
Eligibility: Current CICM Fellows or Advanced/Core Trainees
Priority:   Recently graduated Fellows (within 5 years of graduation)
Closing Date: 22 April 2016

Grant applications will be reviewed by an assessment panel appointed by the CICM Board. A maximum of two grants will be awarded in any one year.

Projects and study should be of direct relevance to intensive care practice and of a high scientific standard. Applications will be considered in both basic and applied research in addition to a period of defined study with demonstrable return to the intensive care community.

A final report will be due at the end of the project.

Intensivist Parent Support Network
The Intensivist Parent Support Network was formed in 2015 by a group of ICU trainees and Fellows to promote a happier and more satisfying work-family balance. Its goal is to provide a forum and practical resource for trainees and Fellows who are planning or raising a young family to discuss their challenges, seek support, network for job-share or part-time opportunities, and to advocate for better training and work conditions to facilitate combining career with family.

New Fellows Conference | 4 - 5 August  2016
Planning is underway for the 2016 New Fellows Conference in Byron Bay. The organising committee have held their first meeting with a program being drafted. Topics will include; Welfare; looking after yourself and others, what makes you a good consultant, the important of non-clinical activities, dealing with difficult colleagues and medico legal work.

2016 Fellow Education Workshops
The next worksop will be held in Darwin, Northern Territory  on Thursday 16 June 2016. 

The College launched a series of Fellow Education Workshops in 2015 and following the success of these, dates and locations for 2016 have been confirmed below.  These workshops are a chance for Fellows to discuss trainees in their region, participate in calibration activities while providing the opportunity to discuss the training program with other Fellows in the same region. We strongly encourage all Fellows to come along so if you have any questions regarding the workshops, please contact Sarah McArthur on sarahmc@cicm.org.au.

ULTRASOUND SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP EVENING SESSION

Are you planning to attend the CICM ASM in Adelaide and are interested in critical care ultrasonography? There will be an additional session on critical care ultrasound on Thursday 2 June from 1700-2000 after the echo/ultrasound Workshop.  An update of the USIG recommendations will be provided in addition to presentations of current echo/ultrasound research studies from ICUs in Australia.  All are very welcome and encouraged to attend!

Lung ultrasound has become a “hot” topic in recent ICU publications and international guidelines describing its diagnostic utility have been published. However, some findings can be strongly influenced by characteristics of the ultrasound machine and transducer used; the terminology used for some findings is idiosyncratic and potentially confusing; and despite the publication of many different and sometimes complicated imaging protocols, there remains no standardised approach to the use of lung ultrasound in the critically ill.

The National Blood Authority has commenced a review of the Patient Blood Management Guidelines: Module 1 – Critical Bleeding/Massive Transfusion (Module 1). This review is being conducted as a pilot to test various approaches to update the Guidelines. The aim is to use the lessons learned from the update of Module 1 to update the remaining modules using more efficient and cost-effective methodologies.The Patient Blood Management Guidelines progress update for the November 2015 – March 2016 quarter is now available on the National Blood Authority website by clicking the link above. 


AMA Public Health Awards 
Nominations are now open for the 2016 AMA Public Health Awards, for which the recipients will be announced at the AMA National Conference to be held in Canberra on 27-29 May 2016. 
The AMA Public Health Awards provide well-deserved recognition of the extraordinary contribution doctors and associated health groups make to health care and public health.
