Obituary 
Garry David Phillips | 7 November 1936- 25 July 2016
Professor Garry Phillips, one of Australia’s best known academic anaesthetists and the 5th President of ANZCA (1996-1998), died quietly at home after battling motor neurone disease (MND) for his last few years.  He was most respected as a good clinician and as a very sound opinion on both medical and medico-political issues.

Communications Course

2017 ASM is returning to the single organ theme.
‘Gastroenterology in the ICU: From beginning to End’.

An exceptional line-up of international and national speakers will update us on the latest evidence, theories and practice, involving the GI system and its evolving importance in critically ill patients. Along with the traditional session set-up, there will be rapid-fire topic and guideline challenging sessions to stir up debate and discussion.

Management Skills Course 

Course Dates and locations for 2017:
Wellington NZ  30 - 31 March
Brisbane  7 - 8 September
 
The two day course will be held in Wellington and in Brisbane in 2017.  The course is specifically designed for trainees who are close to completion of training and CICM Fellows.

• Risk Management and Patient Safety
• Quality and Benchmarking

Survey - For Trainees
Message and survey to trainees from Florian Pracher:

Dear trainees, 

As part of my Master in Clinical Education I am doing a research project in which I want to analyse the use of new online learning resources, as I find this area very interesting and think this development has revolutionised clinical education.

I am conducting an audit to assess when and how trainees use online learning resources with a view to further establish the role of these new learning resources amongst traditional educationalists.

The audit is targeted at all levels of training and I would really appreciate if you could spare the 5 to 10 minutes it should take to complete it.

The audit has been approved by the ethics committee of ACT Health and Flinders University.

Opportunity For New Zealand Fellows
To Become Expert Witness for MCNZ
The Medical Council of New Zealand’s principal purpose is to protect the health and safety of the public by providing for mechanisms that ensure doctors are competent and fit to practice. Under Part 4 of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, the Medical Council may establish a Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) to investigate a doctor’s conduct. A PCC has the option of laying a charge in the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal whose purpose is to determine charges brought against health practitioners.
The PCC may decide that an expert needs to be engaged to provide an independent view of the particulars of the charge; this will require the expert preparing a written report/witness statement, attending the Tribnal hearing and presenting the written report/statement, and answering any questions in cross examination by the Tribunal members.
 
The MCNZ is currently looking to build up a database of NZ based doctors who would be willing to provide the PCC with expert reports and give evidence before the Tribunal.

Some information which may be of assistance:
• The Medical Council would remunerate the expert for services provided at the rate of $120 per hour.
•  In terms of time commitment, most hearings go for around two to three days, in addition to an estimated average of 20-40 hours preparation time.
•  The expert cannot know the doctor who is the subject of investigation.
•   The expert cannot be a member of the Tribunal.
