1-day supervision workshop for non-SoTs (for Fellows and TY Fellows)

This workshop is particularly relevant for clinicians who regularly supervise junior medical staff and are interested in strengthening the link between supervision, trainee development, and patient safety. Supervising Under Pressure Beyond oversight: the art of building safe, capable ICU clinicians In intensive care, patient safety is often framed in terms of clinical decision-making. However, a significant proportion of risk arises from a less visible but equally critical domain: how we supervise. Decisions about when trainees escalate care, how confidently they act, and how they process uncertainty are all shaped by the supervision they receive. These influences extend beyond individual shifts, affecting future clinical judgement and patient outcomes.

Workshop Overview

Through case-based discussion, facilitated reflection, and practical exercises, participants will explore how to make supervision more deliberate, consistent, and impactful.

Key areas include:
Creating psychological safety to support early escalation and open communication
Building trusting professional relationships within high-pressure environments
Applying graded autonomy to balance supervision and independence
Maximising learning opportunities in routine clinical work
Delivering clear, timely, and effective feedback
Supporting the development of self-regulated, reflective clinicians

Format
The workshop consists of interactive sessions incorporating:
Realistic ICU scenarios

Structured role plays and skills practice

The emphasis is on practical application, with strategies that can be implemented immediately in the clinical environment.
