Training - How Do I Register

Applicants for the CICM training program in intensive care medicine will be selected based upon the principles, eligibility criteria and selection criteria set out in the Trainee Selection Policy.

In order to proceed with your application, you must be able to answer “YES” to all of the following questions:

1)   Do you possess a primary medical degree?

2)   Have you successfully completed a 12 month internship (Post Graduate Year 1)?

3)   If applicable, have you obtained limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme;


Limited registration for postgraduate training or supervised practice as set out in the Medical Board of Australia Registration Standard.

If joining the training program in New Zealand, doctors must have appropriate medical registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand

Have you obtained documentary evidence of medical registration in Australia or New Zealand that can be submitted with your application?

4)   Have you completed 6 months supervised experience in an intensive care unit within the last 3 years?

5)   Are you able to obtain:

Two structured references from CICM Fellows who directly supervised you during your 6 months experience.


Two structured references from intensive care specialists (non CICM Fellows) who have directly supervised during your 6 months experience.

The specific requirements of the training program for both General and Paediatrics are available in the CICM Regulations


The Trainee Selection Panel will assess all applications and will meet four times a year. The dates of these meetings will determine the registration date for successful applicants.

It is your responsibility to:

  • be aware of the requirements of the College in relation to your registration;
  • be aware of the requirements of the College in relation to retrospective and prospective accreditation of training;
  • ensure that any applications for registration or for retrospective or prospective accreditation of training are received by the College by the relevant deadlines;
  • ensure all required documentation is provided when requested.
  • ensure all documents requested are originals or certified by a Justice of the Peace.
  • ensure that all letters of service include; your level of seniority, discipline and a breakdown of terms including the duration are submitted to the College in order, to have your training considered for retrospective accreditation. Please note that, letters of appointment and contracts are not suitable documents for evidence of training.
