From the President

As we approach the last quarter of the 2011, the Board is beginning to consolidate a number of key strategies that will be the focus of our activities for next year with the aim of implementing these initiatives in 2012.

The Board has approved changes to two College Policy Documents - IC-01 (Minimum standards for Intensive Care Units) and IC-02 (Intensive Care Specialist Practice in Hospitals Accredited for Training in Intensive Care Medicine). A substantial review of IC-03 (Guidelines for Intensive Care Units seeking Accreditation for Training in Intensive Care Medicine) is underway. These important documents have been updated following the establishment of the College and after extensive input from Fellows and Trainees during the AMC accreditation process. All are encouraged to read these revised documents that are available on the College website.

Three focus areas of the College  have also been identified over the last 18 months since the College  was formed. These are a substantive revision of the education curriculum, developing processes for trainee selection and revising the hospital accreditation process. These three initiatives are interlinked and will be done in parallel through selected sub-committees of the Board. Importantly, there will be ample opportunity for Fellows and Trainees to express their opinions and views on these three key areas directly to the College, through direct mail outs and via the regional committees.

I encourage you all to take time to consider these issues as many of the innovations that will be incorporated into these fundamental areas of Intensive Care Medicine will have an impact on practice for the next few years.

The CPD program is currently being tested and will become operational on schedule in January 2012. My thanks to Lisa Davidson and Gavin Joynt for their tremendous work.

Some Fellows have expressed their concern about the findings of a coronial enquiry in South Australia in March this year. As coronial inquiries are centred around an index case, resultant conclusions and recommendations may not always accord with evidence-based practice or be generalisable to other clinical situations, institutions or health jurisdictions. The College is the sole body that promulgates standards to define the role and expertise of intensive care specialists and remains committed to support education and research to define the highest standards of clinical practice. Fellows should be aware of the coronial legal process when participating in inquests and to obtain independent legal counsel at all times.

We will keep Fellows and Trainees updated on the progress of these developments via e-news, Facebook, through the Regional Committees and the Annual Scientific Meeting.

Best wishes to all,

Prof John Myburgh

From the Office

The CICM Office is busy as always with the Fellowship & Primary Exams approaching, the Curriculum Review underway and the CPD Project in its final stages.

We have recently welcomed a new member to the team, Tracy Tanti.  Tracy will be looking after Hospital Accreditation, the Critical Care and Resuscitation Journal and the New South Wales, Victorian, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania Regional Committees.

Tracy comes to us with a background in science having completed a Bachelor of Biotechnology and Cell Technology at LaTrobe University, and previously worked at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre as a Research Assistant.  She is now keen to establish a career in administration with us, so we warmly welcome her to the College staff.

If you have anything you would like to include in the next edition of the e-news, please email Lisa Davidson.

CPD 2012

The new CPD Diary is currently in the testing phase and so far the feedback has been extremely helpful.

The new program will be launched in 2012 and will be compulsory for all Fellows unless you are a dual Fellow with ACEM, RACP or ANZCA and participating in their programs. Fellows living outside Australia and New Zealand will also be to participate in other programs.

If you would like an opportunity to be involved in the testing of the new online system, please contact Lisa Davidson.

Curriculum Review

You would have received an e-mail which was sent to all Fellows and Trainees with an invitation to make a submission towards the Curriculum Review. If you didn‘t receive this email, please contact Laura Fernandez-Low.

The closing date is Friday 7th October so be sure to submit your comments by then.  Further details can be found on our website here

Rural Health Grant

The College has received a grant from the RHCE program to run a two-day continuing education event which we have called  ‘Bush Track to Boulevard. The course program is aimed at Rural and Regional Specialists (not just CICM Fellows) who wish to maintain their skills and knowledge in intensive care medicine.

The 2012 course (it is funded for two years) will be held in Byron Bay on Thursday 1st & Friday 2nd March. More details of the program will be available shortly on our website, however it will be a combination of presentations from leading clinicians and hands-on workshop sessions.

Registration is free, for further details or to indicate your interest contact Steph Gershon at the College, on stephg@cicm.org.au. We encourage you to convey this information to your colleagues, especially those non-FCICM‘s who may be interested in attending.

Communication Course

The second ‘Communication Skills in Intensive Care‘ course for CICM Trainees was run at the Cullen Hotel on 2 September. A number of changes were made to the program, including the use of actors to allow participants to practice skills in role-play scenarios. The feedback from the course was very positive and we will probably run the course again three or four times in 2012.

We would like to have at least one CICM Fellow attend each course to give Trainees the benefit of their experience and knowledge of interaction with patients and families. This would only involve a time commitment of one or two days per year, so any Fellows that have a particular interest in communication and would like to become involved in this aspect of our training program are welcome to contact Phil Hart on philh@cicm.org.au to discuss this.

Primary Workshop

The College will be running a Primary Examination Workshop at the ANZICS ASM. It will be held on Thursday 13th October, 7:15am at the Brisbane Convention Centre.

UK Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine

I spent quite a bit of time in Australia in my training years, with great experience in Brisbane, Melbourne and working in the Flying Surgeon Service in Central Queensland. When I worked with Dr Malcolm Wright in the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, one of the challenges he made for me (he was a former UK doctor) was to persuade the UK to generate a specialty of ICM, and to enable consultants in ICM to be from specialties other than anaesthesia.

NHMRC Message

Translating Research Into Practice (TRIP) Fellowship.

The NHMRC TRIP Fellowship provides support and training for future leaders in translating important research findings into clinical practice. The Fellowships support protected time for health professionals in researching approaches to applying evidence to improve care, and develop the range of skills needed for leadership in research translation. The Fellowships are intended to promote implementation of established evidence rather than further development of the evidence base for an intervention.
