Cicm welcome From the President From the Office CPD 2012 2012 ASM ICU Update Rural Health Update Point of Interest Courses & Events Positions Vacant Airway Survey |
From the PresidentAs we approach the end of 2011, we can begin to look back on an eventful and productive year for the College . However, the normal functions and outputs of the College continue, with the completion of the October Fellowship exam. Our congratulations to all the successful candidates and an acknowledgement to all the Supervisors of Training, mentors and teachers that all contribute to the successes of our Trainees at the exams. The contributions of our Fellows in supporting our Trainees is the essence of Fellowship and the College acknowledges this tremendous effort. The Board is focussed on redeveloping the curriculum to revise it in accordance with the many changes in intensive care medicine to facilitate and focus training with the principal aim of continuing to train the best intensive care specialists in the world. The new initiatives and proposed changes to the curriculum will be distributed to Regional Committees and Fellows in the first half of 2012 and the College looks forward to receiving input from Fellows and Trainees. The new CPD program is nearly finalised and ready to go "live" in 2012. Many of you will have received a draft manual - please take the opportunity to review this and provide any feedback to Lisa Davidson.
From the OfficeIt‘s hard to believe we are one e-news away from Christmas! The office has been on skeleton staff of late with the exams being run in Sydney and Brisbane. We will return to full ranks on Monday, just in time for the Board meeting next week. We are very sad to announce that a member of the CICM family will be leaving us in the coming weeks, Elyse Lithgow who has been with the College for two and a half years will be bidding us farewell. Elyse has been offered a wonderful opportunity that was too good to pass up and they will be extremely lucky to have her. Elyse has been an invaluable asset to the Training and Exams department and both Trainees and Fellows alike have always spoken incredibly highly of her, she is going to be greatly missed by all the staff in the office and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
CPD 2012The College is introducing a new Continuing Professional Development program in January 2012 to replace the current MOPS Program. The CPD Committee researched a range of CPD programs implemented by medical colleges in Australia and overseas and the final framework features elements from these programs and also the Leap Framework recommended by the CPMC. The Program places emphasis on adult lifelong learning principles. The program is also designed to meet the current standards set out by the AMC and also addresses issues identified by the needs analysis commissioned by the JFICM in 2005. As you will be aware, the Medical Board of Australia has stipulated that from 1st July 2010 medical practitioners who are engaged in any form of medical practice in Australia must be participating in a continuing professional development program that is relevant to their scope of practice. Fellows of medical colleges accredited by the AMC will be fulfilling the requirements if they participate in their Colleges program. Further to this, the College Board decided in February 2011 that to fulfil the requirements of the CICM CPD Program, Fellows must complete the CICM program or alternatively dual Fellows may complete the College CPD programs of; RACP, ANZCA or ACEM. Fellows residing outside Australia and New Zealand may choose to complete a suitable program in their country of residence. All Fellows who do not participate in the College program will be required to submit evidence of participation in their chosen alternative program. The CPD program will be conducted through an online platform. Fellows will have access to a new CPD Online Diary as well as online and printed resources to facilitate participation. The new online diary will be launched in January 2012. If you have any questions about the new program or would like to see the new framework, please contact Lisa Davidson, lisad@cicm.org.au

Airway SurveySurvey of experience in the use of adult difficult airway equipment amongst intensive care (ICU) practitioners As a member of the College we are keen to find out your experience in the use of currently available difficult airway devices. As such we would be very grateful for your participation in a short online survey. Please click on this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/airwaysurvey which will direct you to our automated survey. We suspect that the experience and familiarity of intensive care practitioners with the vast array of adult difficult airway equipment available is diverse. This survey is a simple click box design and should take you 5 minutes to complete. We will not collect any information that could identify you personally or the hospital where you work. Even if you are not currently working in intensive care or adult practice we are still interested in your responses as a member of the College. We hope to publish the results of the survey in 2012 and look forward to sharing those with you. With Thanks, Imogen Ketchley (ICU Senior Registrar - Liverpool Hospital, Sydney) William O‘Regan (ICU Senior Staff Specialist - Liverpool Hospital Sydney)
