The College of Intensive Care Medicine is seeking to engage a Fellow of high standing to the position of Director of Professional Affairs. This position is additional and complementary to that of the current DPA, Dr Felicity Hawker. The DPA is an advisory position to the President and Board of the College on professional matters and strategic issues initiated by the College. The position is part-time (0.2 Full Time Equivalent) and is based at the College head office in Prahran. Residence in Melbourne is not necessary for this position although presence will be required from time to time. The ASM is being held from 4-6 June at the Sofitel Wentworth, Sydney. Rural CommitteeThis year at the ASM, the Committee are holding a meeting for all interested parties.

A message for CICM ASM Registrants. All Specialists (both FCICM and non-FCICM) and Trainees working in rural or regional Intensive Care Medicine, and/or who have a ‘rural‘ interest, are invited to attend this lunch-time meeting (BYO lunch). The meeting format will be relatively informal, with the intention of maximum participation, but advance notification of any points for discussion is welcomed. Any formal apologies will also be noted.
It is likely that some positions on the Committee will have become available, and that there will be a call for expressions of interest from this meeting.

If you wish to attend this meeting, please contact Lisa Davidson at lisad@cicm.org.au CongratulationsBrisbane Fellow, Dr Anthony Holley has been awarded The Matthew Davey Award Overseas Studies Grant, by the Royal Australian Navy. The award will take Dr Holley to the Netherlands to study cryopreservation of red blood cells, as used by the Netherlands Military on deployment. The grant provides up to $14 000 and 20 training days for Dr Holley to study the system and it‘s possible use by the Australian Defence Force.
The award was announed at the Navy Corporate Leadership Forum dinner in March.

TrainingAll trainees are required to submit a 2010 Application for Approval of Vocational Training (AVT). If commencing training you do not wish to have accredited towards your CICM training, please submit the AVT form and leave the details of the training post blank. Please fill in ALL other sections and select the Deferred Training Fee option. This fee covers the College‘s administrative costs throughout the year and entitles trainees not in approved training positions to receive administrative support and College mailings throughout a year of non-accredited training. Please note that AVTs must be received within three months of commencement of the appointment to be considered prospective. For positions of 6 months or less it is advisable to seek approval prior to commencement of the position. Do you have a great idea for research but are not quite sure the best way to develop it next?
All intensivists, senior trainees, research coordinators, nurse researchers and allied health researchers are invited to a research workshop prior to the CICM ASM. This will focus on the development of ‘good ideas‘ into good projects. Present your ideas to senior researchers, a biostatistician and research methodologists for immediate constructive feedback [or just come along and listen if you prefer!] Participants are invited to submit their proposals in advance, which will be sent to a senior researcher who will provide a detailed and constructive critique on the day.

The 3 day Advanced Paediatric Intensive Care Simulation course has been designed for Paediatric Anaesthesia, Emergency and Critical Care Physicians and Trainees; Critical Care Nurses in PICU, Paediatrics and Emergency Medicine. It has a strong emphasis on essential theory required to manage seriously ill children supported by a challenging simulator component. It is based on the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) curriculum for training in paediatric intensive care. The technology used in this course includes high fidelity baby and paediatric mannequins. Communication in difficult situations and crisis resource management are integral components of the course. The Department of Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto is a leader in the delivery of high quality critical care and has leading research and teaching profiles in the world of intensive care. We have world leaders in the fields of ARDS (Gordon Rubenfeld), outcomes from Intensive Care (Brian Cuthbertson), clinical epidemiology in ICM (Damon Scales and Neill Adhikari), influenza in intensive care (Rob Fowler), guideline development and knowledge translation (Taz Sinuff) and trauma (Sandro Rizoli) as well as education in intensive care (Dominic Piquet and Shelley Dev). We are currently offering clinical and clinical/research fellowships in adult Critical Care Medicine to high quality candidates who want to work in this stimulating and vibrant environment. Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English and eligible for provincial licensure in Ontario and specialty certification in their country of origin. The fellowship involves provision of primary patient care for a total of 52 beds, and consulting care to a further 10 beds in the provincial burn unit.
Medical-Surgical-Trauma- The department provides primary care for this 20-bed unit, which admits 1200 patients annually from our trauma, medical and surgical populations. This group includes all major trauma patients from the largest trauma program in Canada.
Cardiovascular- The department provides primary care for this 14-bed unit, which admits 1000 cardiac and major vascular surgery patients annually. The cardiac population includes 70% coronary revascularization, 25% valvular and 5% congenital. The vascular population includes a substantial volume of thoracoabdominal aneurysm repairs.
Neurosurgical-Trauma stepdown ICU- The department provides primary care for this 10-bed unit admitting 750 neurosurgical, trauma and other surgical patients annually.
Medical-Surgical stepdown- The department provides primary care for this 8-bed unit, which cares for 50% acute medical or surgical admissions and 50% elective admissions after major surgery.
Burn - This 10-bed unit handles 200 acute burn admissions annually, which is the largest in Canada. Critical Care physicians covering this unit provide daily consultant service on all critically ill patients.
Critical Care staff physicians attend for a week at a time on these rotations. The fellow is an integral and key part of the team and has the opportunity to assume a position of considerable responsibility. Fellows are involved in all levels of patient care, including primary assessment and management, procedural work, coordination of admissions and discharges, liaison with referring services and external consultations. Through graded assignment of responsibility during the year, the fellow will optimally assume the role of a junior staff physician.
The fellowship involves participation in an active education program, including attendance at a weekly fellow seminar series at the University of Toronto. Protected time for academic work or elective clinical rotations is available. The in house on call schedule for clinical critical care is approximately 1 night in 4. Four weeks of vacation are provided.
