From the President

Following an enormous amount of preparation, the College completed the Australian Medical Council Accreditation process at the end of June. The AMC team spent time visiting many hospitals around Australia and New Zealand followed by an intense week at College  House with the Board and staff. The AMC inspectors consistently commented on the enthusiastic and positive responses received from Fellows, Supervisors and Trainees. It is very gratifying that the new College is valued and well regarded by the community and in this aspect alone, the accreditation was a valuable exercise. We look forward to the final report due in October and are confident that much of the hard work establishing the College will be acknowledged, but more importantly that the Board will continue to work hard to address and improve and maintain the positive momentum. I would like to thank all those involved in every stage of this process, your time and dedication is greatly appreciated.

Of the future challenges ahead, the Curriculum Review is a major priority. It is anticipated that this will be broad ranging review of many of the integral activities of the College that will include the development of modular training, adaptations to outreach medicine, establishment of trainee selection processes and revision of the hospital accreditation process. This project will involve extensive discussions with Regional Committees, Fellows and Trainees and all your input will be valued. It is anticipated that the framework of the new curriculum and associated projects will be completed by the end of 2012.

The Primary Examination continues to develop at a pleasing rate. There are a record number of candidates sitting in the forthcoming examination and it was most gratifying that ALL candidates who passed the CICM primary passed the recent Fellowship examination on first attempt. My thanks to the Primary Exam Committee and Primary course instructors for this outstanding achievement is such a short time.

The Board is committed to supporting Regional and Rural Intensive Care Medicine. Together with ANZICS, the College will develop a special interest group to specifically address Regional and Rural challenges across Australia and New Zealand. This includes participation on the Board and a commitment to education and CPD support.

The College remains committed to supporting the Intensive Care Foundation and held a successful evening at CICM House in July with valued members of the Intensive Care Co-operative. Please support current and future Intensive Care Foundation fundraising initiatives this year.

From the Office

It is hard to believe that we are already in August. Things around the office are busy as always, although we have all breathed a sigh of relief now the AMC accreditation is over.

The College offices have recently been expanded and we are enjoying some more space. Dr Penny Stewart from Alice Springs very generously donated two paintings by renowned Aboriginal artist Margaret Scobie and I am very delighted that the College has chosen to display some of my work, six photographs from Antarctica and the Arctic.

The Training and Exams department have had a reshuffle and all their roles are clearly defined on the website at: http://cicm.org.au/staff.php

If you would like to include anything in future e-newsletters, please email me at: lisad@cicm.org.au

July Board Report

The President‘s Report from the July Board meeting is now on the website. The report details important decisions made at the most recent meeting.

Regulation Changes

Following the recent Board meeting held on 21st July 2011, the Board has made some important changes to Regulation 5, particularly regarding Deferred and Interrupted Training and other areas of training, for full details please visit the website

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Training Department.

Policy Documents

After several months of consultation with Regional and National Committees and other relevant stakeholders, the Board ratified changes to IC1 and IC2.

The updated policy documents will be available on the website from Monday 8th August.

If you have any queries, please contact the College.

CPD Project

The CPD Project is progessing extremely well with the testing phase of the online diary due to commence this month. The team have been working hard on the IT aspects as well as writing detailed manuals and guidebooks for participants.

Lisa Davidson will be at the ANZICS ASM in October with details of the CPD program and access to the online diary for Fellows to test and provide feedback.

It was decided at the February Board meeting that although CPD is compulsory for all Fellows, if you are a dual Fellow with ACEM, RACP or ANZCA, the College will accept their program as a suitable alternative. Arrangements will also be made for those Fellows who reside permanently outside Australia and New Zealand.

The draft framework is available on the website.

We would also like this opportunity to remind all Fellows that the Medical Board of Australia stipulates that you must be enrolled in a CPD program in order to maintain your registration.

Curriculum Review

Whilst still at a very early stage, a review of the CICM curriculum has begun and a preliminary Committee that will lead the review has been formed.  The initial report provided by the AMC to the College outlined several recommendations for changes to the curriculum, and these will be considered in the review.

The College will consult widely with Fellows and Trainees for their input on all significant aspects, so we encourage you to forward your comments to the College when the opportunity arises.   Shortly the College will post a section on the website exclusively dedicated to the review - keep a lookout for it.

ANZICS ASM

The ANZICS/ACCCN Intensive Care ASM will be held in October in Brisbane.

Steph and Lisa from the College will be attending, so please be sure to come and see us at the ANZICS desk. Lisa will be showing off the new CPD Online diary and also seeking expressions of interest in participation in a rural and regional special interest group.

The theme for the ASM is, "Tools of the Trade - Tips, Tricks and Technology" Registration is now open and the full program is available at www.intensivecareasm.com

Communication Course

The second Communication Skills course for Trainees will be held in Melbourne on Friday 2 September at The Cullen Hotel in Prahran.

The course will cover such areas as: breaking bad and catastrophic news; end of life treatment choices; open disclosure and advance care planning. The presenters, Michele Stewart and Helen Golding, are experienced course facilitators and counsellors and are familiar with intensive care issues through their work as presenters on the ADAPT Course.

The course will be a blend of demonstration, small group practice and scenarios that will focus on aspects such as the impact of emotion on communication; the effects of trauma and grief on behavior, active listening and differing communication styles. It is intended that in the future all CICM Trainees will attend this course.

The registration form can be found on the website, get in quick as places are limited and the course is filling up.
If you require any further information, please contact Steph Gershon on stephg@cicm.org.au.

SOT Workshop

Further to the positive response received from the Sydney SOT Workshop run in April, another successful workshop was run in Brisbane in July.  The workshop focused on successfully providing feedback to Trainees on their performance, clinical reasoning, identifying a poorly performing learner, and when to refer a Trainee to the College for remediation.  Interactive sessions allowed SOTs to discuss their experiences with other SOTs, and to model best practice through role playing.

The feedback received was once again very positive, and the College will be conducting another workshop in Melbourne early 2012.

2012 ASM

Plans for the 2012 ASM are progressing well with dates finalised and venues booked in Melbourne.

Mark the 25th - 27th May in your diary for the "Breathe Easy: Oxygenation in the New Millennium" CICM ASM.
