Farewell

From the Immediate Past President
Professor P V van Heerden

In February 2010, the Board of the CICM elected the new leadership team of President-elect Prof J Myburgh, Vice-President, Dr R Freebairn and Treasurer, Prof B Venkatesh.  The inaugural President, Prof PV van Heerden decided not to continue on the CICM board. He considered that his leadership style and temperament had been well-suited to the formation of CICM, but that a different kind of energy was required to move the new College forward and meet the regulatory requirements of bodies such as the AMC in the next few years. Prof van Heerden was delighted with the election results and felt that the interests of the College would best be served by Prof Myburgh assuming the presidency immediately, rather than waiting until June when the election results are to formally take effect. To that end, Prof van Heerden resigned his position to allow Prof Myburgh to assume that role. In doing so, Prof van Heerden expressed the view that the timing was ideal as his role had been completed, the College had commenced operations, and he could be confident that the energetic new leadership team would meet future challenges successfully.   Prof van Heerden thanked the members of the board and the CICM CEO and Staff for their hard work and support during his tenure as JFICM Dean and CICM President and considered his service on the JFICM and CICM boards as highlights of his career. The positive environment and collegiality of the staff and board members were inspirational to him, as was the unselfish support of more experienced board members for those still establishing their careers and place in the JFICM/CICM hierarchy.
