About Us - Board
The College is governed by a Board consisting of ten members elected by the Fellowship for three year terms. The Constitution and Regulations provide for the affairs of the College to be managed by the Board. Co-opted representatives include nominees from regions not already represented on the Board, and from other bodies, such as ANZICS and ANZCA.
Meetings are held three times a year, with results of elections announced at the Annual General Meeting in June each year.
The CICM Board
John Myburgh - PRESIDENT
Professor John Myburgh is Professor of Critical Care at the University of New South Wales and Director of the Division of Critical Care and Trauma at the George Institute for Global Health. He is a senior physician in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at St George Hospital, Sydney. He holds honorary professorial appointments at Universities of Sydney and Monash.
He is President of the College of Intensive Care Medicine, having served on the Board since 2002 and as a Fellowship examiner for 12 years. He established the inaugural Annual Scientific Meeting of the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine in 2005.
He has an extensive laboratory and clinical research track record. He completed a PhD in catecholamine neurophysiology in 2003 and was a foundation member and past Chair of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group. He has received over $36M of research grant funding, published over 100 original articles and 20 book chapters and delivered over 20 plenary lectures at international meetings. Current research activities include large-scale trials of fluid resuscitation, steroids in septic shock, glycaemic control and thermoregulation in critical illness.
Ross Freebairn - VICE PRESIDENT
Ross Freebairn is a full time Intensive Care Consultant and Medical Director, Intensive Care Services and Clinical Director of Acute Services at Hawke's Bay Hospital, in Hastings, New Zealand. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer University of Auckland and Medical Director for Hawke's Bay Rescue Helicopter Trust. Dr. Freebairn, serves as a Council member on the Asian and Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine. Dr Freebairn is a founding member of the BASIC steering group and, is actively involved in courses running in NZ, Australia. Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Pacific and Europe. Married with three children and a dog that still recognizes him .

Rob Boots - CENSOR
Rob is the Deputy Director of the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and an Associate Professor of the Burns, Critical Care and Trauma research centre of the University of Queensland. He has qualifications in both respiratory medicine and intensive care. He has a strong background in clinical epidemiology, clinical teaching and management with a Masters degree in Epidemiology from the University of Newcastle and a Masters Degree in Health Management and Information Technology from the University of Central Queensland. His main research interests include the clinical management of burns and the prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia, the later being the topic of his PhD. He serves on the Point Prevalence Management Committee of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group.
Rob has been the Chair of the Queensland Regional Committee for the JFICM for 6 years and has served on the committee for over 10 years. He takes up a position on the Board of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand in 2010 and is presently the Censor. As Deputy Director of Clinical Training at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospitals he has completed training in clinical education from the Harvard Macy Program for Physician Educators in Boston USA and the Bulstrode and Hunt program of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edin). He previously served as the Deputy Director of training for 12 years at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and ran the procedural skills teaching program. Rob is a lead faculty member of the Queensland Health Skills Development Centre and was active in its design and implementation program in addition to being on the international steering committee of the Basic Assessment and Skills in Intensive Care course now run in some 40 countries and the Program Chair of the Medical Emergency Response Training at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. He has introduced a web-based training program for Medical Emergency response training in addition to a simulation based practical course and is presently working on a web-based generic orientation and teaching program for intensive care units in Queensland.
Amod Karnik - CHAIR, Hospital Accreditation Committee
Amod completed his undergraduate and postgraduate medical degrees from Seth. G.S. Medical College, Bombay. He trained in Intensive Care in London and Birmingham (UK) before coming to Brisbane to complete his FFICANZCA. He has worked as a Consultant Intensivist since 2001 in Toowoomba and Brisbane. A senior lecturer at The University of Queensland, he is active in undergraduate and post graduate medical and nursing education and is an examiner for MBBS and FCICM. He has been the QLD Regional Chair of ANZICS and has been on the CICM board since 2009. As an IMG he is aware of the challenges faced by IMGs in training. His interests include simulation, echocardiography and ultrasound in ICU.
